Let’s talk some baseball as we approach the MLB Trade Deadline 2009, shall we…
DONE DEALS
RHP George Sherrill to Dodgers: The Dodgers got another strong arm in the bullpen in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Will it be enough to push them through the playoffs? Reports have LA aggressively pursuing Toronto starting pitcher Roy Halladay. See below for my thoughts on who will take the NL crown.
P Cliff Lee to Phillies: Holy shenanigans. Is Philly stacked or what? The bats speak for themselves and the pitching is better than good and that was before the addition of Lee. Needless to say, this team is in clear view of a World Series defense this fall. No Halladay, no problem…until you face the Yankees.
OF Matt Holliday to Cardinals: The A’s are selling and St. Louis needs to do what it takes to break away from the pack in the suffocating NL Central. Holliday will supply additional power to a solid lineup and a strong arm. I see the Cards giving the Phils a run for their money this postseason, but pitching will prevail. What’s that, Dodger fans? Maybe next year…unless you get your sticky fingers on the best pitcher in the game. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
UP IN THE AIR
What about Roy Halladay? - Your guess is as good as mine. The Phillies gracefully bowed out of the running after a “ridiculous” trade (according to Philly fans, so take that w/ a grain of salt) offered to the Blue Jays. Apparently Toronto wants Kyle Drabek, yep…Doug’s son, but he is “untouchable” ala Lastings Milledge. Watch out for the Yankees, who just lost Chein Ming Wang for the season, to quietly swoop in. Although the word in the Bronx is that the pinstripes would have to give up both Joba Chamberlain and “Philthy” Phil Hughes. That ain’t happening. The Boston Red Sox are still involved with GM Theo Epstein promising an “impact” trade before Friday’s deadline. You do that, Theo. As mentioned above, the Dodgers, are also in pursuit and after last year’s surprise grab of Manny Ramirez, I don’t doubt that they can get Roy Boy.
BIG PAPI IS A BIG LIAR
Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has been all over the news today. “Why?” you ask. Because, as the New York Times is reporting, dude did steroids and now everyone can get off Arod’s back. Is anybody surprised? I have to admit, I believed Ortiz when he made recent comments about other accused MLB users (after the Arod news). At the same time, can you really believe anything you hear from the league, any of it’s players, the teams or Commisioner Bud Selig? Its a rhetorical question.
Go ahead. Say it. ”It’s just part of the game.” Feel better now?
