Breaking news out of Queens:
WFAN radio in New York is reporting that the slumping New York Mets have traded right fielder Ryan Church for Atlanta Braves’ outfielder Jeff Francoeur this afternoon.

Ryan Church     Jeff Francoeur

During a press conference from Citi Field, Mets GM Omar Minaya said that the team “never got to see the Ryan Church that (he) was when he was a Washington National in 2007.” Minaya believes the size of Citi Field will suit his newest outfielder well. “We have to get a right handed hitter…We have to get a Gold Glove outfielder…”

The Mets will take on Francoeur’s $3.3 million dollar salary and add a big arm to their defense. Francoeur is currently hitting .250 with 5 HR’s and 35 RBI. Although those numbers aren’t impressive, the Mets faithful will likely approve of this trade after seeing their team fall to 4th in the NL East, 5.5 games behind the defending World Champion Phillies. Meanwhile, the Braves get an outfielder hitting .280 but only 2 HR’s and 22 RBI.

To me, this trade is a wash and only got done to quiet the whiney Mets fans and press…for now. The bitching will continue next week. Just another summer in Queens.
