Lakeland, FL - In a surprise move Tuesday morning, the Detroit Tigers released designated hitter Gary Sheffield.
Sheffield, who currently has 499 career home runs, is guaranteed $14 million from the Tigers for this season, whether he plays for them or not. Whats $14 million anyway? Once he clears waivers, don’t be surprised if he gets scooped up immediately by a team in need of putting some fans in the seats. A 500 home run hitter can certainly make the difference in some markets. Sheffield, who has battled through shoulder injuries in the latter part of his career, answered questions on Tuesday following the news calmly. He mentioned an interest in playing for the Tampa Bay Rays, staying close to his hometown.
“It ain’t close”, Sheff responded, when asked about the end of his career. I disagree.
