Los Angeles - LA’s Staples Center on Saturday, January 24 will be the setting for a WBA welterweight title fight between “Sugar” Shane Mosley(45-5, 38 KOs) and Antonio “The Tijuana Tornado” Margarito        (37-5, 27 KOs).

Gerame’s take: Both fighters are in the back end of their storied careers and a win would solidify their position in the boxing world. Tijuana’s Margarito is coming off the biggest win of his career when he stopped then undefeated Miguel Cotto in the 11th round of their July 2008 bout. That fight was the most action I’ve even seen in a boxing match, with the Mexican fighter stepping forward from the opening bell all the way through the stoppage. For the fortunate fans who witnessed that fight, what can’t be expected in Saturday’s match is the same sort of slugfest. Pamona, CA native Shane Mosley is also coming off a win against aging Nicaraguan Ricardo Mayorga when he scored a KO with 1 second left in the fight. I was there that night and couldn’t say I was impressed with Mosley until that final round when his speed and power finally combined.

Tomorrow night, expect the fight to go all 12 rounds with plenty of action but nowhere near the excitement we saw in the Cotto Margarito brawl.  The TJ Tornado will win this one unanimously 9 rounds to 3. But Mosley will continue to see good money fights come his way after the loss.

Cov’s Corner:  Fight fans around the world will turn their attention to the Staples Center Saturday night as The Tijuana Tornado Antonio Margarito and Sugar Shane Mosely face off in the much-anticipated welterweight battle for Los Angeles live on HBO world Championship Boxing.

Margarito enters the scrap coming off an eleventh-round KO victory over previously-undefeated Miguel Cotto. He puts the WBA title that he won from Cotto on the line against osley, whose previous fight was a last-second KO of the always-flamboyant shit-talked, Ricardo Mayorga. Mosley, a former champion in three divisions, is in the twilght of his carreer. A win over Margarito would rejuvenate the 37 year old.

Vegas odds have Margarito as anywhere from a 3-to-1 favorite to a 5-1 favorite.

Cov’s Pick: Margarito KO 10 Mosley
